(Cr\u00e9dit : AFP PHOTO\/ SAJJAD HUSSAIN SAJJAD HUSSAIN \/ AFP).        <\/div>\n      <\/figcaption>\n    <\/figure>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\t Il y aura bient\u00f4t 70 ans naissait \u00e0 Bombay le <em>Progressive Art Group<\/em>, PAG pour les connaisseurs. \n<p>Les artistes peintres Francis Newton Souza, Maqbool Fida Husain, Krishnaji Howlaji Ara, Hari Ambadas Gade, Sayed Haider Raza et le sculpteur Sadanand Bakre cr\u00e9erent le PAG en r\u00e9action aux choix jug\u00e9s d\u00e9suets que faisait le comit\u00e9 de s\u00e9lection de la <em>Bombay Art Society<\/em>, la grande institution qui r\u00e9gnait alors sur les expositions de la ville quand l\u2019Inde devint ind\u00e9pendante en 1947. <\/p>\n<p>Les six comparses ont con\u00e7u ce groupe afin de pouvoir montrer au public leur travail d\u2019artistes que l\u2019on qualifie aujourd\u2019hui de \u201cmoderne\u201d, en rupture totale avec leurs pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseurs nationalistes de l\u2019\u00e9cole du Bengale. Des membres fondateurs, seul Raza, \u00e2g\u00e9 de 94 ans aujourd\u2019hui, est encore en vie. Depuis son retour en Inde en 2010, apr\u00e8s 60 ans pass\u00e9s en France, il a acquis l\u2019aura particuli\u00e8re de celui qui est une l\u00e9gende vivante.<\/p>\n<p>Comme tous les ans, je suis all\u00e9, fin janvier, \u00e0 la <em>India Art Fair<\/em> qui se tient \u00e0 Delhi. La foire est de qualit\u00e9 moyenne ; mais elle s\u2019am\u00e9liore marginalement \u00e0 chaque \u00e9dition. L\u2019\u00e9quipe de Nehal Kirpal, la fondatrice, a encore beaucoup de travail \u00e0 faire pour attirer en nombre les visiteurs internationaux, curieux de d\u00e9couvrir la sc\u00e8ne artistique indienne par exemple. <\/p>\n<p>Cette ann\u00e9e, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 particuli\u00e8rement interpell\u00e9 par les \u0153uvres de Raza que l\u2019on pouvait trouver sur de nombreux stands. Quelques paysages abstraits c\u00f4toyaient des toiles au th\u00e8me g\u00e9om\u00e9trique avec lesquelles l\u2019artiste s\u2019\u00e9tait fait remarquer dans les ann\u00e9es 80.<br \/>\nElles pr\u00e9sentent une vision de la nature &#8211; vision conceptuelle et norm\u00e9e, dont certains disent emprunte de cosmologie Hindou &#8211; dans des palettes de couleurs profondes (surtout les rouges) et chatoyantes (les oranges vifs). Les premi\u00e8res \u0153uvres g\u00e9om\u00e9triques de Raza sont absolument magnifiques. Elles d\u00e9montrent une recherche active d\u2019un langage visuel pr\u00e9cis et codifi\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Cette ann\u00e9e, l\u2019amateur que je suis a \u00e9t\u00e9 frapp\u00e9 par le manque de pr\u00e9cision de ce \u201clangage\u201d. Chauss\u00e9 de mes lunettes pour d\u00e9chiffrer des cartouches qui deviennent de plus en plus petits (s\u00fbrement par \u00e9conomie de papier), je remarque les ann\u00e9es de r\u00e9alisation des \u0153uvres : 2015, 2014, 2013.<br \/>\nToutes ces \u0153uvres ont donc \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9es en nombre et tr\u00e8s r\u00e9cemment par un artiste que l\u2019on sent pourtant affaibli et qui le reconna\u00eet comme dans cet interview donn\u00e9 \u00e0 <em>India Today<\/em> en f\u00e9vrier 2015.<br \/>\nLes lignes tremblent. Les couleurs remplissent des espaces trac\u00e9s au crayon et ne se juxtaposent plus. Le <em>Bindu<\/em> embl\u00e9matique de Raza devient flou, laiss\u00e9 au hasard d\u2019une forme de coloriage d\u2019enfant.<\/p>\n<p>On pourrait croire que l\u2019artiste, arriv\u00e9 au summum de sa carri\u00e8re, reconnu par son pays et son pays adoptif (la France), souhaite se reposer, peut-\u00eatre partager sereinement ses souvenirs avec les plus jeunes&#8230;. L\u2019inverse semble se passer.<br \/>\nUne course effr\u00e9n\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019exposition se dessine. J\u2019ai ainsi compt\u00e9 pas moins de douze expositions \u00e0 Delhi, Calcutta et Londres depuis 2013 dont une d\u00e9j\u00e0 organis\u00e9e en 2016 ! Combien suivront ? Sont-elles justifi\u00e9es ?<\/p>\n<p>Je ne m\u2019interrogerais pas sur les raisons de ce soudain engouement de la part des galeries de l\u2019artiste si les \u0153uvres pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es s\u2019inscrivaient dans un renouvellement de son style, de ses sujets, de ses messages. Je constate juste na\u00efvement que les derni\u00e8res toiles n\u2019apportent rien \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre de Raza, si ce n\u2019est l\u2019impression que son \u0153uvre se dissolve dans un flou plus ou moins artistique. <\/p>\n<p>Je peux comprendre que l\u2019artiste, par habitude peut-\u00eatre et par go\u00fbt certainement, m\u00eame affaibli, ait besoin de peindre. En revanche, j\u2019ai du mal \u00e0 comprendre pourquoi les galeries montrent ces toiles de moindre qualit\u00e9 par rapport \u00e0 celles r\u00e9alis\u00e9es auparavant. <\/p>\n<p>L\u2019\u0153uvre de Raza est tellement vaste ! Son entourage pourrait sans aucun doute l\u2019aider \u00e0 organiser des r\u00e9trospectives ! Par chance, les th\u00e8mes ne manquent pas : des aquarelles de Bombay, aux paysages de plus en plus abstraits, en passant par l\u2019abstraction pure et bien s\u00fbr par l\u2019abstraction g\u00e9om\u00e9trique. L\u2019\u0153uvre de Raza a aussi \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s influenc\u00e9e par les villes dans lesquelles il a v\u00e9cu : Babaria sa ville natale, Bombay, Paris, Gorbio (en France, dans les Alpes-Maritimes). <\/p>\n<p>Un commissaire qualifi\u00e9 se r\u00e9galerait dans les m\u00e9andres d\u2019une telle \u0153uvre ! Or, j\u2019ai l\u2019am\u00e8re impression que ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, Raza est pouss\u00e9 dans une course commerciale non n\u00e9cessaire.<br \/>\nUn jeune collectionneur averti &#8211; qui a r\u00e9cemment achet\u00e9 plusieurs \u0153uvres de Raza &#8211; me faisait d\u2019ailleurs remarquer tr\u00e8s justement que les derni\u00e8res toiles sont <em>\u201cabordables\u201d<\/em>.<br \/>\nDans dix ou quinze ans, qui s\u2019interrogera sur leur qualit\u00e9 ? Elles feront toutes partie de l\u2019\u0153uvre de l\u2019artiste.
