On y trouve les plus beaux exemples d&rsquo;architecture coloniale britannique d&rsquo;Inde et les ensembles de bureaux les plus modernes du pays, les quartiers de villas les plus somptueuses et le plus grand bidonville d&rsquo;Asie, Dharavi. Mukesh Ambani, l&rsquo;homme le plus riche d&rsquo;Inde, y a fait construire une tour enti\u00e8re pour lui, ses enfants et leurs centaines de domestiques, tandis que plus de la moiti\u00e9 des quelque vingt millions d&rsquo;habitants habitent dans des bidonvilles. Capitale financi\u00e8re qui concentre les march\u00e9s boursiers et les activit\u00e9s bancaires, et centre de la production cin\u00e9matographique de Bollywood, Bombay est cosmopolite \u00e0 tous les niveaux : de nombreux \u00e9trangers y r\u00e9sident tandis que l&rsquo;agglom\u00e9ration attire les populations d\u00e9sh\u00e9rit\u00e9es de tout le pays. Une authentique ouverture culturelle internationale coexiste avec les partis politiques les plus farouchement nationalistes au sens local du terme, d\u00e9fendant par la violence la supr\u00e9matie des Maharashtriens (les habitants du Maharashtra, \u00c9tat dont Mumbai est la capitale).\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tPas \u00e9tonnant qu&rsquo;un tel grouillement de communaut\u00e9s, de religions, de langues constitue une <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frenchjournalist.com\/pages\/articles\/15-03-11BombayLivres.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">source d&rsquo;inspiration pour les \u00e9crivains<\/a>. L&rsquo;auteur, Altaf Tyrewala, utilise en outre une technique aussi originale que s\u00e9duisante qui fait immanquablement penser au jeu du Marabout, o\u00f9 s&rsquo;encha\u00eenent mots et expressions reli\u00e9s phon\u00e9tiquement par la derni\u00e8re syllabe du premier mot et la premi\u00e8re du deuxi\u00e8me : marabout &#8211; bout d&rsquo;ficelle &#8211; selle de cheval &#8211; cheval de course, etc.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tCe proc\u00e9d\u00e9 est mis en \u00e9vidence d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but. Le premier chapitre \u00e9voque en quelques lignes les r\u00e9flexions d&rsquo;une femme qui pense notamment \u00e0 son mari. Le deuxi\u00e8me met en sc\u00e8ne ce mari, qui pense \u00e0 son fils. Le troisi\u00e8me, le fils qui pense \u00e0 sa s\u0153ur. Le quatri\u00e8me, la s\u0153ur, qui pr\u00e9pare un avortement. Le cinqui\u00e8me suit l&rsquo;avorteur, et ainsi de suite. Au fil de ces mini-chapitres, le lecteur voit d\u00e9filer un vaste \u00e9chantillon de la population de Bombay. Il y a ce m\u00e9decin rat\u00e9 sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 dans les avortements \u00e0 300 roupies, sans illusion sur lui-m\u00eame &#8211; <em>\u00ab\u00a0dans ce m\u00e9tier, soit vous \u00eates comp\u00e9tent, soit vous \u00eates prudent. Moi je suis tr\u00e8s, tr\u00e8s prudent\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> &#8211; et hant\u00e9 par les enfants morts. Il y a son p\u00e8re, vieil homme qui travaille dans un magasin de chaussures et qui est obs\u00e9d\u00e9 par le d\u00e9c\u00e8s de son \u00e9pouse. On voit \u00e9galement un jeune d\u00e9s\u0153uvr\u00e9 extorquant quelques milliers de roupies \u00e0 une famille riche en leur faisant croire qu&rsquo;il est professeur d&rsquo;ourdou, langue dont il ignore tout. Ou encore un employ\u00e9 insignifiant captur\u00e9 et tu\u00e9 par la police dans une mise en sc\u00e8ne de d\u00e9mant\u00e8lement d&rsquo;un groupe terroriste imaginaire.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tCe faisant, l&rsquo;auteur livre une multitude de petits tableaux : une boucherie dans un bazar, une bo\u00eete de nuit sordide, un mini-bidonville \u00e9difi\u00e9 sur le toit d&rsquo;une tour d&rsquo;habitation de bon standing\u2026 Avec des notations sur la vie quotidienne, du genre de ces appartements o\u00f9 une famille s&rsquo;entasse dans une seule pi\u00e8ce et o\u00f9 du coup <em>\u00ab\u00a0tout le monde se change sur le balcon. On se d\u00e9shabille aux yeux du monde ext\u00e9rieur pour que ceux qui comptent, \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur, ne nous voient pas tout nus.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> A la fin du livre, comme tout jeu du Marabout men\u00e9 \u00e0 son terme, on se retrouve au d\u00e9but, avec la sc\u00e8ne de l&rsquo;avortement de la jeune fille.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tSi ce proc\u00e9d\u00e9 d&rsquo;une multitude de petits textes li\u00e9s entre eux de fa\u00e7on plus ou moins l\u00e2che fonctionne si bien, c&rsquo;est parce qu&rsquo;Altaf Tyrewala r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 croquer des portraits express, convaincants et vivants, en quelques lignes. Des personnages prennent corps autour des petites difficult\u00e9s ou des grandes crises de leur vie, personnages auxquels on s&rsquo;attache imm\u00e9diatement &#8211; au point de regretter souvent de ne pas savoir ce qui leur arrivera par la suite. Les th\u00e8mes de ces mini-drames tournent souvent autour du statut des musulmans \u00e0 Bombay, ville qui a connu de terribles \u00e9meutes communautaires par le pass\u00e9. Un bon nombre des personnages du roman appartiennent \u00e0 cette confession, tout comme l&rsquo;auteur.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tCette nouvelle publication de <em>Aucun dieu en vue<\/em> accompagne la parution d&rsquo;un autre livre d&rsquo;Altaf Tyrewala : <em>Le minist\u00e8re des sentiments bless\u00e9s.<\/em> Beaucoup de ressemblances sur le fond entre les deux livres : l\u00e0 aussi il s&rsquo;agit d&rsquo;une \u00e9vocation des multiples aspects de Bombay, depuis les difficult\u00e9s de la vie quotidienne jusqu&rsquo;aux tensions religieuses et politiques. La forme, en revanche, est tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rente puisque <em>Le minist\u00e8re des sentiments bless\u00e9s<\/em> est une <em>\u00ab\u00a0chronique po\u00e9tique\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> \u00e9crite en vers. Un type d&rsquo;\u00e9criture exigeant auquel ce chroniqueur avoue ne gu\u00e8re \u00eatre sensible. Pour le lecteur press\u00e9, <em>Aucun dieu en vue<\/em> pr\u00e9sente un atout incontestable : sa bri\u00e8vet\u00e9.
