Le plus puissant de tous tient probablement \u00e0 l&rsquo;omnipr\u00e9sence des signes religieux. Temples de toutes tailles, passants arborant d&rsquo;\u00e9tranges peintures sur le visage, images na\u00efves sur le pare-brise des voitures, idoles dans les creux des murs ou les racines des arbres, mini-autels dans les boutiques : on ne peut se promener plus de cinq minutes dans une ville indienne sans \u00eatre confront\u00e9 \u00e0 une telle imagerie. Le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne est d&rsquo;autant plus d\u00e9routant que ces images n&rsquo;ont la plupart du temps aucune signification pour le visiteur \u00e9tranger. Mais il n&rsquo;est pas si facile pour le n\u00e9ophyte int\u00e9ress\u00e9 de trouver le bon niveau d&rsquo;information, entre les guides g\u00e9n\u00e9ralistes qui donnent en quelques pages de vagues \u00e9l\u00e9ments sur Vishnou et Shiva, et les ouvrages de sp\u00e9cialistes qui d\u00e9cortiquent la philosophie de l&rsquo;hindouisme.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tLe livre <em>Dieux de l&rsquo;Inde, images et signes*<\/em> se r\u00e9v\u00e8le \u00e0 cet \u00e9gard une pleine r\u00e9ussite. Jean Delmas y explique en des textes parfaitement lisibles par les non-initi\u00e9s les fondements de l&rsquo;hindouisme. Il passe en revue les grandes divinit\u00e9s, en racontant les principaux mythes qui s&rsquo;attachent \u00e0 elles. Ces textes sont structur\u00e9s autour de la \u00ab\u00a0famille\u00a0\u00bb de chaque dieu. Le chapitre sur Shiva traite ainsi du dieu lui-m\u00eame, de sa monture le taureau Nandi, de son \u00e9pouse Parvati, de son fils Ganesh, etc. Les diff\u00e9rentes fa\u00e7ons dont Shiva est repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 sont pass\u00e9es en revue, de l&rsquo;omnipr\u00e9sent <em>lingam<\/em> au Nataraja, le Shiva dansant.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tDe m\u00eame, la copieuse section consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 Vishnou d\u00e9crit les fonctions du dieu, son \u00e9pouse Lakshmi et sa monture Garuda, et analyse aussi ses nombreux avatars, c&rsquo;est-\u00e0-dire les formes sous lesquelles il se manifeste sur terre. Parmi elles, des dieux aussi importants dans la vie quotidienne des Indiens que Rama et Krishna. A chaque fois, les grandes sc\u00e8nes de la \u00ab\u00a0vie\u00a0\u00bb de ces dieux sont racont\u00e9es de fa\u00e7on concise mais assez d\u00e9taill\u00e9e pour que les repr\u00e9sentations qui en sont faites deviennent compr\u00e9hensibles. Au passage, l&rsquo;auteur donne de remarquables r\u00e9sum\u00e9s du Mahabharata et du Ramayana, les deux textes fondateurs de la mythologie hindoue. L\u00e0 encore, on ne saurait trop souligner \u00e0 quel point le \u00ab\u00a0calibrage\u00a0\u00bb du travail de Jean Delmas est remarquable : ces deux colossales \u00e9pop\u00e9es sont r\u00e9sum\u00e9es en une vingtaine de pages, ce qui permet de les appr\u00e9hender nettement mieux que dans les brefs r\u00e9sum\u00e9s habituels. Chaque \u00e9tape de la pr\u00e9sentation des dieux, chaque \u00e9l\u00e9ment de leur mythologie sont illustr\u00e9s par une ou plusieurs images. Le volume en comprend plus de 450, d&rsquo;origines extr\u00eamement diverses : photos de sculptures antiques prises dans les plus grands sites du pays, chromos populaires du d\u00e9but du XX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, objets publicitaires, statuettes en bois peint\u2026 (n&rsquo;y manquent gu\u00e8re que les miniatures mogholes). Cette grande vari\u00e9t\u00e9 met en \u00e9vidence l&rsquo;universalit\u00e9 de ces repr\u00e9sentations divines \u00e0 travers les si\u00e8cles et permet de rep\u00e9rer les grandes sc\u00e8nes et les th\u00e8mes principaux dans des contextes multiples. Au lecteur peu au fait de l&rsquo;incroyable richesse de la mythologie hindoue, le livre sera d&rsquo;un pr\u00e9cieux secours en lui permettant de comprendre ce qu&rsquo;il verra partout en Inde.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tDeux remarques pour finir : son format de \u00ab\u00a0beau livre\u00a0\u00bb et son poids font de <em>Dieux de l&rsquo;Inde<\/em> un ouvrage aussi agr\u00e9able \u00e0 regarder qu&rsquo;\u00e0 lire, mais emp\u00eachent, du m\u00eame coup, de l&rsquo;avoir avec soi en voyage, ce que le lecteur regrettera sans doute souvent. Enfin, le livre ne traite que de l&rsquo;imagerie hindoue et pas des autres religions du pays. Avec pr\u00e8s de 80% des Indiens qui s&rsquo;en r\u00e9clament, il s&rsquo;agit \u00e9videmment et de loin de la religion dominante. D&rsquo;autres religions comme l&rsquo;islam, le sikhisme, le jainisme, le bouddhisme et m\u00eame le christianisme sont pourtant elles aussi bien pr\u00e9sentes et y g\u00e9n\u00e8rent \u00e9galement une profusion d&rsquo;images.
