Les ambitions de ce gros volume sont en effet \u00e9normes. Il s\u2019agit de retracer le d\u00e9veloppement de la BD depuis ses origines au XIX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle jusqu\u2019aux innovations les plus r\u00e9centes dans l\u2019ensemble de l\u2019Asie. Si le Japon est \u00e0 l\u2019honneur, bien s\u00fbr, \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 l\u2019importance et l\u2019influence des mangas, des pays comme la Chine, la Cor\u00e9e du Sud, les Philippines, la Tha\u00eflande ou l\u2019Inde sont \u00e9galement trait\u00e9s. L\u2019auteur trouve m\u00eame le moyen de parler de la production de bandes dessin\u00e9es en Mongolie ou au Bhoutan !\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tGrand sp\u00e9cialiste de la question, le journaliste et \u00e9crivain britannique Paul Gravett a con\u00e7u cet ouvrage dans le cadre d\u2019une vaste exposition organis\u00e9e par le Barbican Centre de Londres, exposition qui s\u2019est tenue l\u2019ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re \u00e0 Rome et est annonc\u00e9e pour cet \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 Nantes au <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lelieuunique.com\/evenement\/mangasia\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lieu unique<\/a>. De ce fait, son livre tient plus du catalogue d\u2019exposition que d\u2019un guide structur\u00e9 autour d\u2019une approche strictement g\u00e9ographique ou chronologique. En Chine, les \u00ab\u00a0quatre livres extraordinaires\u00a0\u00bb \u00e9crits entre les XIV\u00e8me et XVIII\u00e8me si\u00e8cles ont suscit\u00e9 depuis cent ans une floraison de versions en BD (voir par exemple la publication r\u00e9cente en France du <a href=\"https:\/\/asialyst.com\/fr\/2017\/12\/15\/bd-noel-chinois\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Voyage vers l\u2019Ouest<\/em><\/a>). M\u00eame ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne en Inde o\u00f9 les deux grandes \u00e9pop\u00e9es que sont le <em>Mahabharata<\/em> et le <em>Ramayana<\/em> ont d\u2019abord engendr\u00e9 la publication d\u2019innombrables fascicules destin\u00e9s aux enfants, avant de fournir mati\u00e8re \u00e0 variations sophistiqu\u00e9es de la part des auteurs contemporains de <em>graphic novels.<\/em>\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tAutre chapitre tr\u00e8s important, celui consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 la repr\u00e9sentation de l\u2019histoire en bandes dessin\u00e9es dans les divers pays asiatiques. De l\u2019occupation japonaise d\u2019une bonne partie de l\u2019Asie pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la guerre de Cor\u00e9e en passant par le conflit du Cachemire, tous les grands \u00e9v\u00e9nements r\u00e9cents ont \u00e9t\u00e9 trait\u00e9s par les artistes de BD avec, \u00e9videmment, une large vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de points de vue. Et la bande dessin\u00e9e s\u2019est retrouv\u00e9e souvent au c\u0153ur des d\u00e9bats. D\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9, elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9e comme instrument de propagande. A cet \u00e9gard, on d\u00e9couvre par exemple les petits fascicules que les autorit\u00e9s chinoises distribuaient aux passagers dans les trains pour les \u00e9duquer ou les endoctriner, c\u2019est selon\u2026 M\u00eame la Cor\u00e9e du Nord utilise la BD pour inculquer la pens\u00e9e officielle aux masses laborieuses. De l\u2019autre c\u00f4t\u00e9, nombre d\u2019auteurs de bandes dessin\u00e9es ont utilis\u00e9 leur art pour exposer une vision non officielle des \u00e9v\u00e9nements contemporains (voir notamment <a href=\"https:\/\/asialyst.com\/fr\/2016\/09\/20\/bd-la-vie-chinoise-mode-d-emploi\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">l\u2019exceptionnel r\u00e9cit <em>Une vie chinoise<\/em><\/a>). Quitte \u00e0 souvent subir les foudres de la censure. Dans le Japon de l\u2019apr\u00e8s-guerre, les autorit\u00e9s am\u00e9ricaines interdisaient tout r\u00e9cit s\u2019attardant sur la gloire des guerriers japonais des temps jadis, et dans les ann\u00e9es 2000, ce sont des mangas d\u00e9non\u00e7ant le pass\u00e9 militariste du pays qui ont d\u00fb \u00eatre retir\u00e9s sous la pression des milieux nationalistes.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tUne section de l\u2019ouvrage est consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 la profession de <em>\u00ab\u00a0mangaka\u00a0\u00bb.<\/em> On y d\u00e9couvre que l\u2019extraordinaire popularit\u00e9 des mangas au Japon n\u2019assure pas n\u00e9cessairement la prosp\u00e9rit\u00e9 de leurs auteurs. Lents d\u00e9buts en tant qu\u2019assistants charg\u00e9s de faire le m\u00e9nage, salaires de mis\u00e8re, cadences invraisemblables sont trop souvent le lot des dessinateurs japonais.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tLa censure, on la retrouve dans le chapitre \u00ab\u00a0Censure et sensibilit\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb qui \u00e9voque les relations tumultueuses entre les autorit\u00e9s des diff\u00e9rents pays d\u2019Asie et cette forme d\u2019expression qu\u2019elles peinent \u00e0 appr\u00e9hender. Consid\u00e9rant <em>a priori<\/em> la BD comme destin\u00e9e aux enfants, les pouvoirs publics ont partout eu bien du mal \u00e0 accepter l\u2019apparition d\u2019\u0153uvres pour adultes vues comme devant pervertir les jeunes esprits. En 1967, les <em>manhwas<\/em> (\u00e9quivalent cor\u00e9en des mangas) ont ainsi \u00e9t\u00e9 officiellement inclus parmi les \u00ab\u00a0six maux de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb en Cor\u00e9e du Sud\u2026 Ces affrontements continuels n\u2019ont malgr\u00e9 tout pas emp\u00each\u00e9 le Japon de d\u00e9velopper une consid\u00e9rable production de mangas pornographiques avec des sous-genres surprenants comme ces r\u00e9cits d\u2019amours masculines destin\u00e9s\u2026 \u00e0 un lectorat f\u00e9minin.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tSi les textes de l\u2019ouvrage sont donc pleins d\u2019enseignements, <em>Mangasia<\/em> se distingue surtout par la richesse de ses illustrations. Gravures du XIX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, planches originales, fascicules populaires vendus quelques centimes, productions r\u00e9centes au design sophistiqu\u00e9, plus d\u2019un millier d\u2019\u0153uvres sont montr\u00e9es, originaires de dix-neuf pays diff\u00e9rents, le tout avec une qualit\u00e9 de reproduction irr\u00e9prochable. Et bien s\u00fbr, une \u00e9poustouflante vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de styles graphiques.
