Les nombreux monuments du centre et de l\u2019est de Java, auxquels s\u2019ajoutent les quelques-uns de l\u2019ouest de l\u2019\u00eele et de Sumatra, construits entre les Ve et XVe si\u00e8cles, t\u00e9moignent pourtant d\u2019un pass\u00e9 hindou-bouddhique <a href=\"https:\/\/asialyst.com\/fr\/2015\/07\/16\/une-histoire-du-nom-indonesie\/\" target=\"_blank\">qui a valu \u00e0 l\u2019Indon\u00e9sie son nom<\/a> et qui se prolonge de nos jours notamment \u00e0 travers les nombreux mots d\u2019origine sanscrite dans diff\u00e9rentes langues d\u2019Indon\u00e9sie, ainsi que dans des noms de lieux &#8211; Jayakarta, l\u2019ancienne forme de Jakarta, vient de <em>jaya<\/em>, \u00ab\u00a0victoire\u00a0\u00bb et <em>krta<\/em>, \u00ab\u00a0acte\u00a0\u00bb &#8211; et de personnes : par exemple l\u2019ex-pr\u00e9sidente Megawati (<em>megha<\/em>, \u00ab\u00a0nuage\u00a0\u00bb, et le suffixe \u2013vanti) et l\u2019ex-pr\u00e9sident Susilo (<em>sushila<\/em>, \u00ab\u00a0bonne conduite\u00a0\u00bb) Bambang Yudhoyono (<em>yuddha<\/em>, \u00ab\u00a0guerre\u00a0\u00bb et <em>yana<\/em>, \u00ab\u00a0chemin\u00a0\u00bb). Aujourd\u2019hui, il n\u2019y a plus que dans l\u2019\u00eele de Bali que la majorit\u00e9 de la population se r\u00e9clame de l\u2019hindouisme (<a href=\"https:\/\/asialyst.com\/fr\/2015\/07\/09\/bali-creation-de-limaginaire-occidental\/\" target=\"_blank\">avec les r\u00e9serves que nous avons d\u00e9j\u00e0 expos\u00e9es<\/a>).\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<h2>Diffusion de l\u2019islam<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tL\u2019une des premi\u00e8res questions que l\u2019on peut donc se poser porte sur le passage d\u2019un syst\u00e8me religieux \u00e0 un autre. R\u00e9my Madinier, sp\u00e9cialiste fran\u00e7ais de l\u2019islam en Asie du Sud-Est, \u00e9crit &#8211; dans son ouvrage paru en 2012, <em>L&rsquo;Indon\u00e9sie, entre d\u00e9mocratie musulmane et islam int\u00e9gral : histoire du parti Masjumi (1945-1960)<\/em> &#8211; que <em>\u00ab\u00a0l\u2019arriv\u00e9e de l\u2019islam en Indon\u00e9sie demeure encore aujourd\u2019hui une question tr\u00e8s controvers\u00e9e\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>. L\u2019historien am\u00e9ricain Peter Sluglett, sp\u00e9cialiste du Moyen-Orient, consid\u00e8re lui qu\u2019il faut penser la diffusion de l\u2019islam en Asie du Sud-Est, et en particulier en Indon\u00e9sie, comme <em>\u00ab\u00a0une s\u00e9rie de d\u00e9veloppements \u00e9tir\u00e9s et progressifs, commen\u00e7ant avec l\u2019arriv\u00e9e dans la r\u00e9gion de marchands musulmans au VIIIe si\u00e8cle, peut-\u00eatre m\u00eame plus t\u00f4t\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>*. Des textes arabes et chinois de l\u2019\u00e9poque attestent en effet de la pr\u00e9sence de marchands et m\u00eame de communaut\u00e9s musulmanes dans les ports du sud de la Chine au IXe si\u00e8cle, et \u00e0 Sriwijaya (l\u2019actuelle Palembang dans le sud de Sumatra) au Xe si\u00e8cle.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\t<div class=\"bulle\">\n\t*Peter Sluglett, \u00ab\u00a0The Spread of Islam in Southeast Asia c.1275-c.1625\u00a0\u00bb, <em>MEI Insight<\/em>, No. 55 (mars 2012).<\/div>En Indon\u00e9sie, la conversion de la population \u00e0 l\u2019islam semble donc \u00eatre un processus plut\u00f4t qu\u2019un \u00e9v\u00e9nement. L\u2019essor de l\u2019islam dans l\u2019archipel commence vers la fin du XIIIe si\u00e8cle. Dans son ouvrage <em>A History of Islamic Societies<\/em> (2002), l\u2019historien am\u00e9ricain Ira M. Lapidus, nous apprend ainsi qu\u2019en 1282, le roi de Samudra sur la c\u00f4te nord de Sumatra est encore hindou mais a des conseillers musulmans. Le plus ancien t\u00e9moignage \u00e9crit connu attestant de l\u2019\u00e9tablissement de l\u2019islam en Indon\u00e9sie, est la tombe de Malik Al-Salih, roi de Samudra mort en 1297.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tLorsqu\u2019en 1292 Marco Polo, dans son voyage de retour de Chine par la mer, fait escale dans le port de Perlak pr\u00e8s de Samudra, il y constate la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019une communaut\u00e9 musulmane bien \u00e9tablie. Le voyageur marocain Ibn Batt\u00fbta, qui fait \u00e0 son tour escale \u00e0 Samudra en 1346 lors de son voyage en Chine, est re\u00e7u par son prince, Al-Malik Al-Zahir qui est donc musulman. Egalement, plus caract\u00e9ristique du monde indon\u00e9sien est le cimeti\u00e8re de Troloyo, pr\u00e8s du site de la capitale du royaume hindou-bouddhique de Majapahit dans l\u2019est de Java, o\u00f9 l&rsquo;on trouve des tombes musulmanes dont les dates vont de 1376 \u00e0 1611. Louis-Charles Damais de l\u2019Ecole fran\u00e7aise d\u2019Extr\u00eame-Orient (EFEO) pense qu\u2019il s\u2019agit de personnages importants, peut-\u00eatre m\u00eame de membres de la famille royale. Ces tombes attestent donc de la pr\u00e9sence de l\u2019islam au c\u0153ur m\u00eame du plus prestigieux des royaumes javanais de la p\u00e9riode hindou-bouddhique, d\u00e8s son apog\u00e9e au XIVe si\u00e8cle.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tL\u2019origine des marchands qui apportent l\u2019islam en Indon\u00e9sie est incertaine. Selon Sluglett, les diff\u00e9rents \u00e9l\u00e9ments trouv\u00e9s en Aceh et d\u2019autres lieux \u00e0 Sumatra sugg\u00e8rent comme origine des premiers marchands musulmans venus dans l\u2019archipel, les r\u00e9gions indiennes du Gujarat et de Malabar. Dans le cas de Java, des Chinois ont \u00e9galement jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le dans la diffusion de l\u2019islam sur la c\u00f4te nord de l\u2019\u00eele, o\u00f9 au XVe si\u00e8cle d\u00e9j\u00e0 ils formaient d\u2019importantes communaut\u00e9s. La tradition javanaise associe des Chinois \u00e0 l\u2019islam, dont \u00e9videmment l\u2019amiral Zheng He, qui fait escale dans l\u2019\u00eele lors de ses diff\u00e9rentes exp\u00e9ditions de 1405 \u00e0 1433.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tUn facteur fondamental dans la diffusion \u00e0 travers l\u2019archipel indon\u00e9sien est la politique men\u00e9e par Parameswara, un prince bouddhiste de Palembang qui fonde Malacca vers 1400. Pour faire face aux ambitions du royaume siamois d&rsquo;Ayutthaya, Malacca se met sous la protection de l\u2019empire chinois. Cette protection permet \u00e0 la cit\u00e9-Etat de prosp\u00e9rer et de devenir le plus important port d\u2019Asie du Sud-Est. Parameswara pousse les commer\u00e7ants musulmans qui contr\u00f4lent le r\u00e9seau reliant le Moyen-Orient et l\u2019Inde d\u2019une part, \u00e0 la Chine et l\u2019archipel d\u2019autre part, \u00e0 utiliser son port. Malacca se retrouve ainsi \u00e0 la t\u00eate d\u2019un vaste r\u00e9seau marchand qui couvre l\u2019ensemble de l\u2019archipel indon\u00e9sien. Ce r\u00e9seau permet la diffusion, \u00e0 la fois du malais (la langue de Parameswara, originaire de Sumatra) et de l\u2019islam.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tAu XVIIIe si\u00e8cle, \u00e0 l\u2019exclusion de Bali, tous les Etats des r\u00e9gions c\u00f4ti\u00e8res de l\u2019archipel ont \u00e0 leur t\u00eate un souverain musulman. La diffusion de l\u2019islam \u00e0 travers l\u2019archipel s\u2019est traduite par un espace id\u00e9ologique et culturel qui va d\u2019Aceh \u00e0 la pointe nord de Sumatra \u00e0 l\u2019Ouest, au nord des Moluques \u00e0 l\u2019Est, en passant par le littoral de Born\u00e9o, la c\u00f4te nord de Java et le sud de C\u00e9l\u00e8bes. C\u2019est d\u00e9j\u00e0 une bonne partie de l\u2019Indon\u00e9sie actuelle.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<h2>L\u2019islam dans la conception indon\u00e9sienne de la nation<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tUne deuxi\u00e8me question porte sur la place de l\u2019islam dans la conception indon\u00e9sienne de la nation. Selon l\u2019historiographie indon\u00e9sienne officielle, ce n\u2019est pas dans des milieux musulmans qu\u2019une \u00ab\u00a0conscience nationale\u00a0\u00bb \u00e9merge. En 1908, des \u00e9tudiants en m\u00e9decine issus de la noblesse javanaise cr\u00e9ent une association dont le but est de donner aux Javanais une \u00e9ducation occidentale, tout en d\u00e9veloppant leur propre culture. On consid\u00e8re donc que le mouvement national indon\u00e9sien est n\u00e9 dans les milieux aristocratiques d\u2019\u00e9ducation europ\u00e9enne. Certes, les milieux musulmans sont aussi les initiateurs d\u2019un mouvement : en 1911, des commer\u00e7ants javanais musulmans fondent le Sarekat Dagang Islam (\u00ab\u00a0association commerciale musulmane\u00a0\u00bb) pour lutter contre la concurrence chinoise grandissante. Ce mouvement propose lui aussi un message de modernit\u00e9, comme le pr\u00e9sente Peter Malcolm Holt et al., dans leur imposant ouvrage : <em>The Cambridge History of Islam<\/em> (1970). Mais comme l\u2019\u00e9crit l\u2019historien australien M. C. Ricklefs dans son livre <em>A History of Modern Indonesia since c<\/em>. 1200, ce qui va orienter le mouvement national dans les ann\u00e9es 1930, c\u2019est la conscience que la diversit\u00e9 religieuse des Indes n\u00e9erlandaises implique le rejet d\u2019un projet islamique. D\u2019ailleurs, les figures les plus \u00e9minentes qui vont appara\u00eetre durant cette p\u00e9riode, et qui seront les premiers dirigeants de l\u2019Indon\u00e9sie ind\u00e9pendante, n\u2019appartiennent pas \u00e0 la mouvance musulmane.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\t<div class=\"bulle\">\n\tGamal Komandoko,<em> Boedi Oetomo: awal bangkitnya kesadaran bangsa<\/em> (\u00ab\u00a0Le Boedi Oetomo : le d\u00e9but de la conscience nationale\u00a0\u00bb, 2008)<\/div>Les fondements de l\u2019Etat et de la nation indon\u00e9siens ne seront pas l\u2019islam. La constitution r\u00e9dig\u00e9e dans le sillage de la proclamation de l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance en 1945 ne contient d\u2019ailleurs <a href=\"https:\/\/asialyst.com\/fr\/2015\/06\/05\/indonesie-un-pays-musulman\/\" target=\"_blank\">aucune r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 l\u2019islam<\/a>. Cette conception n\u2019est pas partag\u00e9e par certains milieux musulmans. En 1947 dans l\u2019ouest de Java \u00e9clate la r\u00e9bellion du Darul Islam (\u00ab\u00a0cit\u00e9 de l\u2019islam\u00a0\u00bb), qui entend cr\u00e9er un \u00ab\u00a0Negara Islam Indonesia\u00a0\u00bb (\u00ab\u00a0Etat islamique d\u2019Indon\u00e9sie\u00a0\u00bb). Le mouvement est rejoint par des groupes en Aceh dans le nord de Sumatra et dans le sud de C\u00e9l\u00e8bes. Ce n\u2019est qu\u2019en 1961 que les derniers rebelles rendront les armes.\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tAujourd\u2019hui, ce qu\u2019on observe, surtout depuis la d\u00e9mission de Soeharto en 1998, c\u2019est la mont\u00e9e d\u2019actes d\u2019intol\u00e9rance de la part d\u2019organisations qui se r\u00e9clament de l\u2019islam. Les pers\u00e9cutions \u00e0 l\u2019encontre de minorit\u00e9s religieuses seraient en augmentation. Le pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent gouvernement du pr\u00e9sident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono \u00e9tait accus\u00e9 d\u2019en \u00eatre <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/news\/2013\/12\/30\/yearender-indonesia-s-pluralism-alive-awful-shape.html\" target=\"_blank\">complice<\/a>. Cette intol\u00e9rance ne vise pas seulement des personnes mais aussi des symboles. En f\u00e9vrier 2012, des membres du <em>Partai Keadilan Sejahtera<\/em> (\u00ab\u00a0parti de la justice prosp\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb) islamiste d\u00e9claraient que l\u2019embl\u00e8me de la Croix-Rouge indon\u00e9sienne \u2013 fond\u00e9e en 1945 peu apr\u00e8s la proclamation de l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance &#8211; ne correspondait pas \u00e0 l\u2019identit\u00e9 d\u2019un pays dont la majorit\u00e9 de la population \u00e9tait musulmane. L\u2019organisation a aussit\u00f4t r\u00e9pliqu\u00e9 que <em>\u00ab\u00a0l\u2019Indon\u00e9sie n\u2019[\u00e9tait] pas un pays fond\u00e9 sur une foi mais <a href=\"http:\/\/thejakartaglobe.beritasatu.com\/archive\/indonesian-red-cross-refuses-to-change-its-logo\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>un pays s\u00e9culier<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n\t<div class=\"text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n\t\tLa grande majorit\u00e9 des Indon\u00e9siens, y compris musulmans, semblent toutefois tenir \u00e0 leur Etat et leur nation pluralistes. Le score des partis se r\u00e9clamant de l\u2019islam lors des \u00e9lections l\u00e9gislatives stagne autour de 15%. Le gros des voix, aux alentours de 70%, va \u00e0 des partis dits \u00ab\u00a0nationalistes\u00a0\u00bb, un terme que la politologue australienne Michele Ford qualifie d\u2019euph\u00e9misme pour <em>\u00ab\u00a0secular\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> (mot qui ne correspond qu\u2019imparfaitement au fran\u00e7ais \u00ab\u00a0la\u00efc\u00a0\u00bb, NDLR).
